Monadnock
Programs MDTS - Monadnock
Defensive Tactics System The Monadnock Defensive Tactics
System (MDTS) is a basic 8 hour Self Defense and subject control
program designed for both entry level and veteran officers. The
focus of MDTS is to stabilize and control non-compliant subjects who
are unarmed. In MDTS, students will learn how to handcuff compliant
and non compliant subjects. They will learn how to deflect an attack
through instinctive one and two handed blocking techniques. These
defensive manoeuvres are designed to neutralize the attack (not the
attacker). Students will learn counterattacking skills such as
punches, hammer fist strikes, palm-heel strikes, knee strikes, front
kicks, and angle kicks. This basic skills will be drilled repeatedly
with targets on the subject’s body to strike which will cause
minimal trauma while giving the officer maximum control of the
subject. MDTS Instructor WHAT DOES A MDTS INSTRUCTOR DO?
An agency
trainer (hereafter “MDTS Instructor”) can certify his/her agency officers that
have successfully completed the initial 8-hour MDTS Basic Course. It is
the responsibility of a MDTS Instructor, who is working either at an agency or
is a self-employed/independent trainer, to appropriately document training, as
well as recording test results, according to MDTS Basic Course procedures and
test forms. GENERAL
INFORMATION: The
Monadnock Police Training Council (hereafter "MPTC” or “Council") makes the
Monadnock Defensive Tactics System (MDTS) Instructor Course available to public
and private law enforcement (hereafter “criminal justice”) agencies. Criminal
justice agencies may enroll an agency trainer(s) in a MDTS Instructor Course or
host a MDTS course at an agency facility. An agency
trainer who holds the title of MDTS Instructor may teach and certify other
qualified law enforcement, corrections, military, and private security personnel
in the following Council program.
1. MDTS
Basic Course Certification Curriculum – Minimum certification time for a
first time student is 8- hours.
The minimum time to certify a first time applicant
(hereafter “applicant”) as a MDTS Instructor is 16 hours. These
sixteen hours of training includes lecture, demonstrations, skill performance,
and assessing minimum cognitive and teaching abilities by a MDTS
Instructor-Trainer. {Due to
the sensitive nature of this information, a MDTS Instructor is responsible for
screening students who enroll in a MDTS Basic Course. Prior to enrollment, a
MDTS Instructor shall verify that students hold: (1) a valid federal, state or
local criminal justice identification card, (2) a valid retiree identification
card issued by a federal, state or local criminal justice agency, (3) a valid
state licensed security officer or equivalent status by employment or contract
with a corporate authority or (4) performs military law enforcement, corrections
or security duties.} The MDTS
Instructor curriculum requires hands-on [a.k.a., psychomotor] participation, as
do all MDTS curricula, for certification. MEB (Basic)- Monadnock
Expandable Baton This 4 hour course covers all
the principles and practical for the use of the police straight or
expandable baton. The Monadnock System of training is based on the
principles of Protect and Restrain. Students will be taught how to
properly use a straight or expandable Baton. Each student will be
required to demonstrate under controlled situations proper
techniques. All techniques are gross motor skills, which are
compatible to the affects of survival stress. This simplicity in
design allows for quicker learning and retention under the stress of
resistance. The course emphasizes striking large muscle groups,
which are colour coded to represent potential trauma on impact.
These targets have been proven to be more effective and have less
potential for permanent injury, than striking joints or
indiscriminate targets. An understanding of the Monadnock baton
chart and use of force principles is stressed. MEB (Advanced)-

PPCT Programs Defensive Tactics This 40 hour PPCT Defensive
Tactics course is the first subject control system developed through
tactical, legal, and medical research. Tactically, the system
addresses the most common types of resistance officers encounter,
allowing the instructor to maximize training on job related
techniques. Legally, the PPCT System teaches a simple use of force
continuum, which clarifies the appropriate force level for every
level of resistance. Medical research was conducted on every PPCT
technique to refine technique efficiency and to ensure the medical
implications were proportional to the level of resistance. Edged Weapons Defense This 16 hour PPCT Spontaneous
Knife Defense System has been designed to meet the needs of police,
correctional and security officers. The students training will begin
with a comprehensive course on offensive knife systems. The focus of
this training is to raise the student's awareness to the
sophistication of strategies, yet the simplicity which an officer
can fall victim to a moderately trained subject with a knife. The
second phase of training will focus on the PPCT Knife Defense
techniques, based upon a realistic, yet highly aggressive check and
stun philosophy. This system has evolved to the simplest form, where
all of skills are gross motor skills that are compatible to the
affects of survival stress. This simplicity in design allows for
quicker learning and retention under the stress of a knife assault. S.H.A.R.P. (Sexual
Harassment Assault and Rape Prevention) This 16 hour PPCT SHARP Program
has been specifically designed to meet the needs of women when
control methods and assault prevention methods are required.
Principles and strategies for effectively reducing the likelihood of
assault through actual techniques of countering an attack are
stressed in this program. Utilizing efficient and effective methods
of subject control that do not rely on size and strength, PPCT has
developed a training system that can be used by just about everyone
who is interested in personal safety. Sharpening the Warrior's
Edge Sharpening the Warrior's Edge is
the first 8 hour course to examine survival and combat performance
from a scientific perspective. This course examines how survival
stress affects three components of officer survival; survival
reaction time, survival skill performance, and courtroom testimony.
The focus of this course presents research explaining the
relationship between survival stress, deteriorating survival skill
performance, and why perceptual narrowing (tunnel vision, auditory
exclusion, critical incident amnesia) occurs. Besides analyzing how
stress affects all aspects of performance, Sharpening the Warrior's
Edge provides students with strategies and techniques designed to
lower the heart rate before subject confrontation, which in turn
enhances the officers' perceptual skills, reaction time, and
survival skill performance. |
